Job cuts at Transcontinental have no impact on the plants represented by the Teamsters Union

 13 :47 EST
Transcontinental announced this morning that major job reductions measures will affect their activities in Mexico, the United States, and Canada. The recession is said to be the cause of the printer’s decision.

It seems that this decision will have no impact on the Québec plants where workers are represented by the Teamsters Union.

“Our members should not be affected by the announced cuts,” clarified Stéphane Lacroix, director of communications for Teamsters Canada, in an interview Canal Argent.

Workers from several other Transcontinental plants in Québec are not unionized. It is therefore difficult to determine precisely where the company’s management intends to reduce its activities.

Teamsters Local Unions 555 M and 1999 represent hundreds of workers in several of Transcontinental’s plants in Québec.

“We are monitoring the situation very closely,” Lacroix added. “Our members will be informed as events occur.”

The Teamsters Union represents 125,000 members in Canada in all trades. The International Brotherhood of Teamsters, with which Teamsters Canada is affiliated, has 1.4 million members in North America.
