Teamsters Canada was successful in getting unanimous support from the House Committee on Transport for an amendment to permit the Committee to review all regulations made under the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act “either on its own initiative or on receiving a written complaint regarding a specific safety concern.” The amendment provides for public scrutiny of regulations, which will improve the regulatory setting process creating safer conditions for workers and the public. The Committee will make its report on Bill C-9 to Parliament and the Bill will proceed to third reading later in the Parliamentary session.
The amendment was introduced by Mr. Joe Volpe MP, Eglinton – Lawrence and Liberal Transport Critic at the Committee Hearing. Mr. Volpe met with the Teamsters on the amendment, and he pointed out that the Teamsters talked with government and opposition members on the Committee to gain support for the amendment. We thank Mr. Volpe for both bringing the amendment and his comments throughout the meetings on Bill C-9, which show his interest in and his understanding of the transportation industry.
Mr. Brian Jean MP, Fort McMurray-Athabasca and Parliamentary Secretary of Transportation, was going to bring the same motion as Mr. Volpe to the Committee. Mr. Jean noted his frequent conversations with the Teamsters and our discussions over the amendment. The wording of the amendment was originally proposed by Mr. Jean in a different Bill, and that amendment and its wording was the result of a lot of work with Mr. Jean. We thank Mr. Jean because his support and the support of the Conservative Members on the Committee was essential for the amendment to pass.
Teamsters Canada will monitor the progress of the Bill through Parliament and support its swift passage.
