In 2009, thousands of Canadians have been injured or have died at work. For this reason, the Teamsters Union is once again launching its awareness campaign in the context of the International Commemoration Day for Dead and Injured Workers, which takes place on April 28th.

This campaign will be broadcast on the radio in British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, and Quebec from April 20th to the 26th. Thousands of Canadians will be able to hear Teamsters Canada's message.

“The death of Steve L’Écuyer several years ago reminded us that the battle has not been won,” said Robert Bouvier, president of Teamsters Canada. “There is still much to be done to guarantee the health and safety of workers in all of Canada's workplaces. The Teamsters Union works every day on this issue and the goal of our campaign is to build awareness about this sad reality.” In addition to its awareness campaign, every year the Teamsters Union trains hundreds of shop stewards on this topic. The aims of the training are twofold: to define workplace health and safety and employer obligations and to help shop stewards understand the role of health and safety representatives and especially how to organize as unions in the area of workplace health and safety.

“If we all do our part, I am convinced we will see the end of these sad statistics,” concluded Robert Bouvier.

The Teamsters Union represents 125,000 members in Canada in all trades. The International Brotherhood of Teamsters, with which Teamsters Canada is affiliated, has 1.4 million members in North America.
