Networking and the Social Media

  Brothers and Sisters,

As we begin 2010, we are all becoming aware of the limitless possibilities out there on the information highway.  Twitter, Facebook, Skype and MSN have opened  doors to dialogue and instant communication which were unheard of in the past. We can now be connected, like never before. Its inexpensive, requires minimal know-how and is open to anyone with internet access.

The rank and file membership on the ground and in the trenches, has access to information and ideas which we need to hear in order to best serve you.  Likewise, you deserve the strongest communication network possible...fast, efficient and reliable.  We have to access every avenue available to ensure that you are kept up to date and informed and that you have the most efficient means to communicate with us and each other. So that you (and our Union) can get the most out of these networking tools, we are currently working on a training package for the TCRCMWED local chairs and membership. Networking and social media are not things to be afraid of, they are quickly becoming integral facets of communication... every day. And we cannot afford to be left behind.

Its amazing how many people are stepping up to the plate to help out. Not just our members, but activists and media people from all areas of communication. I realize that many of our membership are already fully versed in (and utilizing) internet dialogue, and if you have some ideas and want to be involved in the development of the training, get hold of me at wbrehl@tcrcmwed.ca or contact Lise Cyr at lcyr@tcrcmwed.ca .

We always work best when we work together. I think that this is even going to turn out better than the investigations handbook we developed, which has been invaluable to novice, as well as experienced reps.

We will be doing more local chair training in the spring and are intending to attach the "networking" lessons as a module in that package.

Our website @ www.tcrcmwed.ca is badly in need of a facelift. Five years have gone by so fast and though the content is constantly changing and staying timely, we need to make it easier to navigate. Look for positive changes and improvements there over the next few months.  2010 is our year, let's make it the best yet.

To keep up to date and current, we are compiling a master list of member's e-mails.  This is the first step to being able to communicate important information as soon as possible and as you know, not everything can be put up on the website. Especially when discussing bargaining and other sensitive issues.

So, all TCRCMWED members with Internet access, please send an e-mail with your name and the railway you work for, to lcyr@tcrcmwed.ca .  Even if we have your e-mail, I'd appreciate it if you resend it (with your name and employer) for the new programming, as not all e-mail addresses identify the member.

Lodge officers, if you gather this information at meetings, please ensure that you have the member's permission to send their address.

Your e-mails will only be used for Union business and will not be given to any outside party.  Every effort will be made to protect your privacy.

Together we are at our strongest and every opportunity that we have to improve our ability to communicate, as well as increase our solidarity, is an opportunity that we cannot afford to miss.

Stay safe, stay strong, stay united.
