12 :11 ESTAnother organizing campaign in Ontario has produced a successful outcome. Indeed, the 53 workers employed by Vaughan-based Witron stood their ground and chose the Teamsters Union, thus ignoring their employer’s many attempts to discourage them from joining the union.
The workers’ reaction was unequivocal. An overwhelming majority of these workers voted in favour of joining the Teamsters.
These warehouse workers will be represented by Teamsters Local Union 419.
“The employer’s pathetic attempts to discourage the workers from unionizing failed,” explains Brian Lawrence, president of Teamsters Local Union 419. “To the contrary, the workers considered this strategy as proof that their decision to join our union was justified.”
The negotiation of a first collective agreement will be planned in the very near future.
The Teamsters Union represents 125,000 members in Canada in all trades. The International Brotherhood of Teamsters, with which Teamsters Canada is affiliated, has 1.4 million members in North America.
